Wiener Philharmoniker Week in Japan 2021
Daiwa Securities Group Presents
Riccardo Muti Conducts Wiener Philharmoniker
November 3-12 2021

Suntory Hall presents Wiener Philharmoniker Week in Japan 2021 in November. Founded in 1842, the internationally renowned orchestra is closely linked with the rich musical history and tradition of Vienna, and it continues to enchant audiences all over the world with its special and incomparable sound.
Since 1999, Suntory Hall has been hosting Wiener Philharmoniker Week in Japan, an annual residency that gives Japanese audiences a regular opportunity to enjoy this distinguished orchestra. In 2020, the orchestra hit the headlines when they successfully toured Japan despite the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic.

The 2021 Japan Tour will be led by the great Maestro Riccardo Muti, who celebrates his 80th birthday this year, as well as fifty years of conducting the Wiener Philharmoniker. His last visit with the orchestra was thirteen years ago. It is the culmination of the orchestra’s special year with the Maestro, which began with the live broadcast of the New Year’s Concert from Vienna’s Musikverein, and continued with a tour to Italy in May which included a concert at La Scala, and appearances at the Salzburg Festival in the summer. Maestro Muti is currently Music Director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and is founder of the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra.
At Suntory Hall, Muti conducts two orchestra-only programmes which amply demonstrates the close artistic partnership between him and the Wiener Philharmoniker. Needless to say, Mozart’s “Haffner” Symphony and Schubert’s C major Symphony “Great” are repertoire that they both excel in (November 11, 12); the other programme combines Stravinsky’s elegant Divertimento from his ballet The Fairy’s Kiss with Schubert’s fourth symphony and Mendelssohn’s “Italian” symphony inspired by Muti’s homeland (November 3, 8).

As in previous years, there will be education and outreach events including a violin masterclass by a member of the orchestra (November 10), an open rehearsal (November 8) and a School Program (November 11).

The Wiener Philharmoniker has built close ties with Japan over the years, and after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, the orchestra offered a donation of one million euros to help people recover from the disaster. The Suntory Group matched the amount and set up the “Vienna Philharmonic and Suntory Music Aid Fund”, which continues to provide support through music in the Tohoku region as well as in Kumamoto. This year, the students in these areas will be able to enjoy the video of the School Program concert.
